Tinnitus & Cannabis: The Relationship & Effects
New York Daily Weed Report ᐧ
What is Tinnitus? Well according to the Mayo Clinic, it’s what we all commonly associate ear ringing with, but to a lager degree. More specifically, it is described as not being “a condition itself, [but rather]…a symptom of an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury or a circulatory system disorder. [which is characterized by] the annoying sensation of hearing sound when no external sound is present [and dealing with symptoms such as] ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking and hissing. As it pertains to various treatments for this ailment, common remedies include solutions varying from earwax removal, noise suppression with white noise or implanted devices, to tricyclics antidepressants and Xanax. However, one remedy that isn’t commonly mentioned to treat Tinnitus is cannabis.According to the Compassionate Certification Centers of California, “A recent study also found that the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, in addition to the receptor 2-AG are expressed in the cochlear nucleus. This expression, plus cannabis’ already established use as a treatment for epilepsy and seizures, allows us to explore the idea of cannabis as a possible treatment for tinnitus”. This may present itself as relevant information due to the fact that some Tinnitus has been said to be brought on by a form of sensory epilepsy that is caused by hyperactivity in the brain‘s cochlear nucleus. Additionally, another theory provided by Dr. Tzounopoulos in an article from Hearing Health Matters states that “Tzounopoulos compares tinnitus to chronic pain and addiction, which also seem to involve plasticity in the brain and are treated with medical marijuana. While this does not shed light on the precise mechanism by which medical marijuana provides relief for tinnitus, it does show the components of the mechanism”All of this information serves as an indicator that more research needs to be done, however, given the studies that have been performed, people may have reason to believe that cannabis can be a great defender against Tinnitus. Once cannabis legalization reaches the federal level, people may finally find the answers they’re looking for…we’ll keep you posted on all new developments.
